In the upcoming year, the team that selected Red Deer hockey legend Brent Sutter in the National Hockey League will honor him with a prestigious award.
Earlier this month, the NHL team announced that the owner and general manager of the Red Deer Rebels will be inducted into the New York Islanders Hall of Fame.
“I am undoubtedly honored. At a press conference on November 8, Sutter stated, “It’s not something you ever think about or expect.”.
It was never about personal goals for me; instead, it was about giving my all to help the team succeed and wanting to be a great teammate who was very coachable. “As you get older, you look back on your career and what you really wanted to be.”
On January 17, the Islanders and San Jose Sharks will play a game in honor of Sutter. Before the game, he will have an on-ice ceremony with his wife, Connie, and kids, Merrick, Brandon, and Brooke. The ceremony will include a tribute video that highlights his career and appearances by current Islanders Hall of Fame members and former teammates.
Sutter is “one of the all-time New York Islanders greats,” according to Islanders president and general manager Lou Lamoriello, who also said the team is honored to honor him.
As the fourth team captain in club history, Brent was a leader and a vital part of the Stanley Cup winning teams in 1982 and 1983. “He was proud of his position and embodied the essence of being an Islander,” Lamoriello told NewYorkIslanders.com.
Sutter has been inducted into the Islanders Hall of Fame for the sixteenth time. His name will be revealed on the recently created Ring of Honor inside the UBS Arena bowl during the pre-game ceremony on January 17. Additionally, his own plaque will be added to the Hall of Fame wall, which is located at the main entrance of the stadium.
The Islanders selected the Viking, Alta. native 17th overall in the 1980 NHL Entry Draft, and he spent 12 seasons with the team. Sutter finished sixth in franchise history with 610 points (287 goals and 323 assists) in 694 games with the Islanders. In 1982 and 1983, he and the team won two Stanley Cups.
In terms of game-winning goals (tenth all-time with 37), power-play points (eighth all-time with 176), power-play goals (fifth all-time with 90), short-handed goals (eighth all-time with 12), and even strength points (ninth all-time with 417; even strength goals, ninth all-time, 185), he is among the top ten in Islanders history.
