Buffalo Sabres General Manager Kevyn Adams is remaining patient and focused on his long-term goals, despite rival teams attempting to exploit the team’s current struggles. According to Elliotte Friedman on the 32 Thoughts podcast, Adams has received trade inquiries from other clubs looking to take advantage of Buffalo’s slow start. While the Sabres sit at a 6-7-1 record, Adams is unwilling to make hasty decisions that could jeopardize the team’s future.
Friedman notes that Adams has communicated his willingness to discuss trades, but he’s not interested in offers that would require him to part with key young players like defenseman Bowen Byram or forward Dylan Cozens. He emphasized, “Kevyn Adams is out there saying, ‘I want to help my team,’” which indicates his intent to strengthen the roster rather than weaken it.
The Sabres aren’t looking to unload struggling players either. Among the trade targets discussed, Dylan Cozens has struggled with consistency this season, prompting teams to try and buy low, but so far, those attempts have failed.
Adams has been clear in telling opposing teams, “We’re not interested in doing that,” often responding with sarcasm when asked how trading would benefit the Sabres. This approach has halted further negotiations, as other GMs struggle to provide compelling answers.
In a league where the pressure to win often leads to impulsive and detrimental trades, Adams is committed to Buffalo’s young core and their future development. The Sabres may wish to be further along in their journey, but Adams believes that just because the results haven’t always materialized doesn’t mean they won’t.
While Adams shares the common desire among GMs to improve his team, he’s determined not to make panic moves that could derail the Sabres’ growth. When everything clicks, it can lead to impressive wins, like the recent 6-1 victory over the New York Rangers, but when it doesn’t, it can feel like a crisis.
