The Washington Capitals have loaned forward Mike Sgarbossa to the Hershey Bears of the American Hockey League (AHL), as announced today by senior vice president and general manager Chris Patrick. Sgarbossa, 32, has played in two games for the Capitals this season.
Currently in his seventh season with the Bears, he has tallied nine points (1 goal, 8 assists) in seven games during the 2024-25 season. His eight assists rank second on the team and are tied for the seventh highest in the AHL. The 6’0″, 192-pound center recorded seven points (4 goals, 3 assists) over 25 games with the Capitals in the 2023-24 season, setting a career high in goals for a single NHL season and matching his career high in total points (previously achieved in the 2016-17 season with 2 goals and 5 assists in 29 games).
He also played 44 games with Hershey, where he led the team with 43 points (7 goals, 36 assists) and a points-per-game average of 0.98. In the 2022-23 season, Sgarbossa registered 58 points (21 goals, 37 assists) in 60 regular-season games with Hershey, leading the Bears in assists, total points, and power-play assists (16).
This total was his highest since the 2018-19 season (65 points in 75 games), during his first season with the Bears, while his 37 assists set a new career high. Over his 269 games with Hershey, he has accumulated 246 points (87 goals, 159 assists). A native of Campbellville, Ontario, Sgarbossa has played 44 games for the Capitals since the 2019-20 season, contributing 13 points (6 goals, 7 assists) and a +6 plus-minus rating. In his 92 NHL games across stints with the Capitals, Florida Panthers, Anaheim Ducks, and Colorado Avalanche, he has recorded 23 points (8 goals, 15 assists). In total, he has compiled 445 points (159 goals, 286 assists) in 581 career AHL games with the Bears, Manitoba Moose, San Diego Gulls, Springfield Thunderbirds, Lake Erie Monsters, and Norfolk Admirals.
