BREAKING NOW: SF Giants are making godson of Dodgers’ Tommy Lasorda their new GM

The San Francisco Giants are reportedly poised to appoint Zack Minasian as their new general manager, promoting the godson of Hall of Fame Dodgers manager and notable Giants adversary, Tommy Lasorda, to a key front office position.

USA Today’s Bob Nightengale first reported the upcoming hire, stating that the official announcement is expected on Friday. Nightengale also mentioned that Minasian’s brother, Perry Minasian, is the GM of the Los Angeles Angels, which would make their family the first in MLB history to have two siblings serving as general managers simultaneously.

The San Francisco Giants are set to reveal on Friday that Zack Minasian is their new GM. This promotion makes the Minasian Family the first to have two brothers as GMs concurrently in MLB history, with Perry leading the Angels.

When the Giants dismissed President of Baseball Operations Farhan Zaidi and appointed Buster Posey as his replacement, Posey expressed the desire to hire a general manager with a strong scouting background. Zaidi brought Minasian on board in 2019 following his tenure with the Milwaukee Brewers, where Minasian demonstrated his scouting expertise.

During a 14-year period with Milwaukee, Minasian advanced rapidly, becoming the youngest scouting director in baseball at age 27. After joining the Giants, Zaidi promoted him to vice president of professional scouting in 2022.

Minasian’s father, Zack Minasian Sr., served as a longtime clubhouse manager for the Texas Rangers, often bringing his four sons to the ballpark. Following Lasorda’s passing in 2021, Minasian Sr. authored a memoir detailing his summer spent working for Lasorda with a minor league team in Ogden, Utah.

Upon joining the Giants, Zack Minasian humorously remarked that Lasorda viewed him as a “Benedict Arnold” for switching allegiances to the Giants.

“He said he bleeds Dodger blue,” Minasian recalled in an interview. “I joke I was baptized in it.”

The Giants are hiring the baptized-in-Dodger-blue Minasian just one day after the Dodgers secured their eighth World Series, tying the franchise with the Giants for the fifth-most titles in MLB history.
