Jacks take ninth-consecutive conference title

Carson Noecker finished second, leading South Dakota State to its ninth consecutive Summit League Cross Country Championship on Saturday afternoon.

HEAD COACH ROD DEHAVEN

It was a great day for the Jackrabbits. We are certainly proud to be part of this program and to have the men and women win on the same day. That’s not an easy thing to do. I think the men really responded well to a very strong North Dakota State team that definitely challenged us and got our attention. I am certainly proud of them and the way they executed today. We’re lucky to have the chance to compete again at the regional meet and prove ourselves in a bit of a bigger pond.”

THE RACE

Noecker battled with Oral Roberts’ Abraham Chelangam throughout the race. In the final 2K, Chelangam found an edge over Noecker; however, both finished under the conference meet record. Noecker secured silver with a time of 23:51.47, breaking the SDSU Bluffs Golf Course record, which was previously set by Chase Cayo in 2017 at 24:44.8.

Cody Larson crossed the finish line 25 seconds behind Noecker, earning bronze with a new personal record of 24:15.93. Larson’s performance was impressive, finishing nearly 15 seconds ahead of the fourth-place runner and more than a minute faster than his previous conference performance.

Josh Becker completed the top five with a time of 24:35.56. Freshman Eli Hall continued to impress, finishing in sixth with a time of 24:39.42, achieving a new personal record. Ben Anteau rounded out the Jackrabbit scoring in ninth place at 24:50.46.

Jackson Dutcher secured a spot on the All-Summit League Second Team with a 13th-place finish, clocking in at 25:02.39. Cormick Logue followed in 15th with a time of 25:05.27. Brandon Kampsen, in his first conference meet, finished 18th at 25:07.60. Dale Johnson and Will Lohr finished 24th and 25th, respectively, with times of 25:25.76 and 25:29.33.

THE AWARDS

The Jackrabbits dominated the All-Summit League First Team podium, claiming four of the seven spots. Noecker and Becker received their second-straight First Team honors, being the only two athletes to achieve this.

Larson, after missing the Second Team by four spots last year, made a remarkable comeback with a third-place finish, earning his first All-Summit League honors. Hall joined Noecker, Larson, and Becker on the First Team podium in his first conference meet. The standout freshman was also the first newcomer to finish, earning him the Summit League’s Newcomer of the Year award, along with his First Team honors.

Anteau, in his first conference race, earned a spot on the All-Summit League Second Team. Dutcher also made the Second Team after improving from last season.
