The Washington Capitals are heading out on the road again, but defenseman Matt Roy is still making progress and won’t be ready to return just yet.
Head coach Spencer Carbery informed reporters on Friday that Roy will not be traveling to Tampa for the upcoming road trip, although he has resumed skating. He skated prior to practice and worked with the goalies, but has yet to participate in any team practices. Roy sustained a lower-body injury during the second period of Washington’s season-opening loss to the New Jersey Devils, and it’s been unclear what exactly occurred. He has been sidelined for the past five games. With Roy sidelined, Dylan McIlrath has stepped in, pairing up with Martin Fehervary on the second defensive line.
Having the 29-year-old back will be a major boost for the Capitals, who are currently on a five-game winning streak. Roy, who signed a six-year deal with Washington this offseason, is a strong right-handed defenseman known for his ability to shut down opponents and effectively transition the puck up ice.
The Capitals will take on the Tampa Bay Lightning on Saturday before returning home for a matchup against the New York Rangers on Tuesday.
