The New Jersey Devils have played more games than any other team this season, currently leading the NHL with eight games and 11 points, placing them first overall in the league, the Eastern Conference, and the Metropolitan Division.
This suggests they’re performing well and having a strong start. However, head coach Sheldon Keefe is already voicing concerns about their performance at home. Although the Devils’ record at home is 2-2-0, one of those wins occurred in Prague, where they were the designated home team against the Buffalo Sabres. Keefe’s worries specifically focus on their play at the Prudential Center in front of their home fans. In a recent game, they lost to the Washington Capitals 6-5 in overtime. While the match showcased some competitiveness from New Jersey, it also highlighted defensive issues on their blue line.
Keefe has frequently labeled their home performances as “unacceptable,” especially after the sloppy losses they’ve faced. In the latest game, the team struggled with puck retrieval, lost many battles, and allowed the Capitals to control the play in dangerous areas. When asked about adjusting his line combinations, Keefe noted he was looking for a spark. Captain Nico Hischier responded well, scoring two goals in quick succession to tie the game after the Devils were down by two. However, Keefe was expecting more from the overall effort.

Prior to the loss to the Capitals, the Devils fell to Keefe’s former team, the Toronto Maple Leafs, facing similar performance problems. Keefe expressed disappointment with both games, especially because a matchup against the Capitals is crucial as it involves a divisional opponent. During his time with the Maple Leafs, Keefe led them to a 22-15-4 record at home, while the Devils struggled last season with a 17-21-3 home record, compared to 21-18-2 on the road. This week, the Devils have three home games scheduled against the Tampa Bay Lightning, New York Islanders, and Anaheim Ducks. Keefe is eager to resolve these issues quickly.
