Breaking: Knicks’ frontcourt hit with another injury setback right before season

The New York Knicks have been actively shaping their roster ahead of the 2024-25 season, which comes with high championship hopes following their acquisition of Karl-Anthony Towns from the Minnesota Timberwolves.

Towns was acquired primarily to address concerns about the team’s frontcourt depth, which will now face even greater challenges due to a recent injury update.

“New York Knicks forward Precious Achiuwa has a strained left hamstring and will be re-evaluated in 2-4 weeks,” reported NBA insider Chris Haynes. Achiuwa stepped up into a bigger role during last season’s playoff run due to a series of injuries the team faced in the second round against the Indiana Pacers. While he put in a commendable effort, it became clear that the Knicks needed to bolster their frontcourt depth in the offseason.

This need was further highlighted by center Mitchell Robinson’s ongoing injury issues; he is now the longest-tenured Knicks player following several roster changes made this summer. Robinson is expected to miss part of the 2024-25 season due to an ankle injury. Achiuwa’s injury will increase the pressure on Towns to perform at an All-Star level immediately, especially as he adjusts to a new offensive system centered around point guard Jalen Brunson.

Towns joins offseason addition Mikal Bridges and the recently re-signed OG Anunoby as new members of the Knicks, who harbor true championship aspirations for the first time in more than 20 years. The Knicks will kick off their season against the defending NBA champion Boston Celtics on October 22, with the game scheduled to begin at 7:30 PM ET in Boston.
