Michigan’s standout cornerback, Will Johnson, left Saturday’s game against Illinois with what appeared to be a lower-leg injury.
Projected as a top-five pick in the 2025 NFL Draft, Johnson exited during the Wolverines’ 21-7 defeat after limping off the field in the first half. Although he returned to the sidelines after halftime, he was not wearing his helmet and did not participate in the second half. CBS Sports reported during the broadcast that he sustained an ankle injury, but Michigan coach Sherrone Moore provided limited information, stating, “It’s something he’s been working through.”
Johnson has faced multiple injuries this season, previously leaving a September game against USC due to a shoulder issue and undergoing offseason knee surgery, which caused him to miss the first three games of 2023. Despite these challenges, Johnson came into Saturday’s game with 14 tackles, 2 interceptions, and 3 pass breakups, highlighting his capabilities that have caught the attention of NFL scouts. ESPN’s Mel Kiper currently ranks Johnson as the No. 2 overall prospect for the 2025 NFL Draft, following Colorado’s Travis Hunter.
Michigan suffered its third loss of the season on Saturday, falling 21-7 to Illinois. The Wolverines now hold a 4-3 record, facing more challenging opponents ahead, including Oregon, Indiana, and Ohio State before the season concludes.
While there’s little doubt Johnson wants to finish the season, there’s an argument suggesting he might be better off opting out of the remaining games to start focusing on the 2025 NFL Draft. Following this loss, Michigan is officially eliminated from the College Football Playoff race and could face difficulties qualifying for a bowl game.
With not much left to compete for as a team, Johnson might consider this a business decision. It’s important to note that this is purely speculative, and no information has surfaced from Johnson’s camp indicating he plans to sit out the rest of the season—at least not yet.
