Stars Prospect Mavrik Bourque Set to Make Season Debut Against Sharks
Mavrik Bourque will make his season debut on Tuesday against the Sharks, as confirmed by head coach Peter DeBoer. This indicates that he will be activated from the season-opening injured reserve after missing over a week due to an undisclosed injury.
At just 22 years old, Bourque had an impressive season in the AHL with Texas, where he recorded 77 points (26 G, 51 A) in 71 games, leading the league in scoring and earning All-Star and MVP honors. His strong performance prompted a brief NHL call-up last year, culminating in a debut against the Blackhawks in early April, where he registered two shots on goal in less than 11 minutes of ice time.
Following the retirement of Joe Pavelski, there were expectations for Bourque to step into a top-nine forward role for the Stars. Although an injury hindered his chance at the season opener, he now gets his opportunity in the second week of the 2024-25 campaign. Bourque will replace Tyler Seguin in the lineup, as Seguin is being held out due to a minor lower-body injury for precautionary reasons.
With Bourque’s activation from SOIR and the recall of defenseman Alexander Petrovic earlier Tuesday, the Stars now have a complete 23-man roster. They could create an additional spot by moving Mathew Dumba to IR, as he was downgraded to week-to-week with a lower-body injury.
Bourque counted just $9,314 against the cap while on SOIR, per PuckPedia, so their cumulative cap hit will increase by roughly $885K with his activation instead of his entire $894K cap hit.
