Breaking Now: NM State football Tyler Wright fired after investigation into social media posts

New Mexico State’s offensive coordinator and quarterbacks coach, Tyler Wright, has been let go, as confirmed by a university spokesman to the Las Cruces Sun-News on Friday. The news was initially reported by Sam Guzman at KTSM.

Wright’s dismissal follows an investigation into over 150 racist, sexist, and homophobic posts on his X account (formerly Twitter), disclosed by the Sun-News on September 27. Two weeks prior, Aggies athletic director Mario Moccia indicated that Wright would “not be with the team.” In response to the controversy, Wright deleted the offensive posts and removed all references to NMSU from his X profile, including team logos and his official titles.

Among the problematic posts were comments that suggested Ugandan warlord Joseph Kony “should be a college coach” and a statement about “beating” a roommate if they were LGBTQ+. His posts also included numerous homophobic slurs, over 60 references to Kony that featured racial comments about Africans and African Americans, derogatory statements towards women, and stereotypes about Hispanics and Latinos.

Records show that these objectionable posts were made between 2011-2014 while Wright was a wide receiver at Tarleton State, before he began his coaching career in 2015. He played at Tarleton for four seasons, contributing to the team becoming co-champions in the Lone Star Conference in 2013.

Wright was in his third season with the Aggies and served as offensive coordinator for the first time. Previously, he was the team’s tight ends coach and special teams coordinator under former coach Jerry Kill. During Wright’s tenure calling plays, the Aggies ranked second-to-last in yards per game and seventh-to-last in points per game among FBS teams. Andrew Mitchell, the offensive line coach and run game coordinator, has taken over play-calling during Wright’s investigation and is expected to continue in this role.

The Aggies, currently at 1-5, are set to face Louisiana Tech (2-3) at home on Tuesday at 6 p.m.
