Mets Consider Key Roster Decision with All-Star Jeff McNeil’s Return Approaching
Mets manager Carlos Mendoza faces a decision regarding the potential return of infielder Jeff McNeil for the NLCS, starting Sunday, October 13th.
All indications suggest that veteran McNeil will rejoin the New York Mets. Mendoza must determine which player will be excluded from the NLCS roster if McNeil is cleared to play. To prepare, McNeil plans to participate in back-to-back games on Friday and Saturday in the Arizona Fall League for live at-bats.
In a media call, Mendoza noted that McNeil aims to accumulate seven to nine innings in each AFL game. If everything goes according to plan, he will be added to the NLCS roster.
McNeil’s return would provide Mendoza with crucial lineup flexibility, as he can play second base and both corner outfield spots. Prior to his right wrist fracture in early September, which sidelined him for the rest of the regular season, McNeil was having a strong performance, batting .289 with a .923 OPS in 41 games post-All-Star break.
According to Metsmerized’s Mike Mayer, Mendoza is contemplating leaving off a pitcher if McNeil is ready. This could mean omitting either Adam Ottavino or Danny Young, neither of whom has pitched in the first two playoff rounds. Young, one of two left-handed relievers in the Mets’ bullpen, might be favored over Ottavino.
This strategy would also allow the Mets to retain rookie Luisangel Acuna on the roster, providing an extra bench player. Acuna offers excellent infield defense and adds speed on the base paths.
McNeil’s return could impact the playing time of Jose Iglesias and Tyrone Taylor, both right-handed batters, making McNeil a strong-side platoon option against right-handed pitching. Additionally, he could serve as a valuable pinch-hitter and fill various defensive positions.
Regardless of Mendoza’s ultimate choice, McNeil’s anticipated presence on the NLCS roster would significantly enhance the Mets’ chances as they pursue their first pennant since 2015.
