Why I Chose UNC Over Other Prominent Programs in the 2025 Recruiting Surge – Derek Dixon

Hubert Davis achieved his first win for the 2025 recruiting class as Derek Dixon committed to the Tar Heels on Friday. The four-star prospect selected North Carolina over competitive programs such as the Pittsburgh Panthers, Arizona Wildcats, and Vanderbilt Commodores.

Derek Dixon began receiving offers in 2022 from notable teams like the Butler Bulldogs and Kansas State Wildcats. Despite over 15 interested programs, he only visited Vanderbilt on Aug. 30, Tar Heels on Sept. 6, and Arizona on Sept. 13.

Standing at 6-foot-3, Dixon is regarded as one of the best combo guards in his class, leading Team Takeover to the Peach Jam Championship game this year in South Carolina. He averaged 13.9 points, 2.1 rebounds, and 3.4 assists, with a shooting percentage of 37.8% during the tournament. Additionally, he is recognized as a tenacious defender, making it challenging for even the most skilled perimeter players.

Other 2025 recruits may join Derek Dixon at North Carolina

Hubert Davis has already missed out on Malachi Moreno and Jasper Johnson, both of whom committed to the Kentucky Wildcats. Currently, the program has offers pending for one small forward, two combo guards, three shooting guards, and eight power forwards.

Out of 14 prospects, four have visited the program, and three are expected to visit UNC in the coming weeks. While Davis may not secure commits from all seven prospects, the Tar Heels are well-positioned to enhance the quality of their 2025 freshmen class.

Among the active pursuits, players like Koa Peat, Nikolas Khamenia, Braylon Mullins, AJ Dybantsa, Isaiah Denis, Acaden Lewis, and Niko Bundalo are ranked higher than Derek Dixon by 247Sports.

In addition to Dybantsa, who is regarded as the best player in the nation, UNC is reportedly in discussions with three other top 20 prospects.

When asked about his reason for joining Davis’ roster

Dixon reflected on his mindset to win and his perception of the Tar Heels being the best at it.

I want to win,” Dixon said to 247Sports’ Dushawn London. “And that’s what Carolina is all about.”
