Chris Canty played four seasons with the New York Giants, including as the starting defensive end for the 2011 team that famously went from a 9-7 record to win their second Super Bowl against the Patriots, a legendary moment in Giants history. As a former player, his insights on Giants matters carry weight. On Friday, following some questionable decisions by coach Brian Daboll during New York’s 20-15 loss to the Cowboys—particularly his choices to kick field goals instead of going for fourth-down conversions in the first quarter and early in the third quarter from the Dallas 3-yard line—Canty was asked by Mike Greenberg on ESPN’s “Get Up!” about Daboll’s position. “Toast,” he replied, adding, “Brian Daboll is toast.” Daboll has been with the Giants for three seasons, starting strong with a Coach of the Year award after leading the team to a 9-7-1 record and a playoff appearance in 2022. However, the team fell to 6-11 last year and is now 1-3 in 2024. Part of the challenge for Daboll has been the performance of quarterback Daniel Jones, who enjoyed a breakout season during Daboll’s first year but struggled with injuries in 2023, missing 11 games and performing poorly in the six he did play. Jones has a quarterback rating of 80.8, ranking 23rd among starters. He is in the second year of a four-year, $ 160 million contract, but the Giants have an option to part ways after this season. When asked whether Daboll or Jones is more likely to stay, Canty responded, “I would say Daniel Jones has a better chance of being back than Brian Daboll.”
Canty elaborated on this topic during his other ESPN show, “Unsportsmanlike.” He stated, “If I had to choose, I think it’s clear that Daboll is the one who goes, while Jones stays.” Canty added, “I’m not fully ready to give up on Daniel Jones, but based on what I’ve seen from the Giants at 1-3, I’m pretty much done with Brian Daboll.”
