The New York Jets may not have to look far for additional pass-rush assistance.
ESPN NFL Insider Dan Graziano identified the Jets as a “potential destination” for New York Giants pass rusher Azeez Ojulari.
Ojulari, 24, is currently in the last year of his $ 6.7 million rookie deal and will become an unrestricted free agent next offseason. Graziano noted that the Giants have revamped their pass rush and have limited Ojulari’s role this year. He has only played 38% of the defensive snaps in the first three games, marking a significant career low. Given this situation, it seems unlikely the Giants will extend his contract before free agency.
So, why not trade an expiring asset for future draft picks?
Meanwhile, the Jets are determined to compete in the 2024 season and wouldn’t shy away from acquiring a player on a short-term basis to enhance their championship hopes. Ojulari entered the league as the 50th overall pick in the 2021 NFL draft and has tallied 17 sacks, 29 quarterback hits, 15 tackles for loss, and a total of 85 tackles over his four-year career.
In addition to his ability to pressure the quarterback, Ojulari comes at a bargain price, as Graziano pointed out he’s earning just $ 1.58 million in the final year of his contract for 2024.
The Jets will eventually need to bolster their roster, whether that means working with Ojulari or another player.
New York aimed to utilize Haason Reddick, Jermaine Johnson, and Will McDonald against rival offenses this season. However, Reddick has yet to report to the team, and Johnson suffered an Achilles injury in Week 2.
While McDonald has been impressive, ranking second in the league in sacks, he can’t shoulder the burden alone. Until Reddick returns, the Jets will need additional players to round out their rotation, especially to fill Johnson’s spot.
Even with some key defensive players missing, the Jets have still managed to excel. Through the first three weeks of the season, their defense has recorded 14 sacks, ranking them tied for second-best in the NFL, according to ESPN.
They’ve achieved this through strategic plays, increased blitzing, and contributions from other players stepping up. The Jets possess a mix of lesser-known names along their defensive line, including former first-round picks who didn’t pan out and undrafted free agents. This coaching staff has a reputation for maximizing the talent at their disposal.
Currently, the plan appears to rest on trusting their existing players and coaches rather than seeking out new additions. However, adding more talent could enhance their prospects. Acquiring Ojulari would likely involve trading a mid-round draft pick.
