Jaguars QB Trevor Lawrence’s contract details are ugly if he doesn’t turn things around

Jaguars QB Trevor Lawrence’s contract terms are concerning if he doesn’t improve. His contract ties him to the Jaguars for several seasons, raising alarms after a rough start to the 2024 season. The Jacksonville Jaguars are off to a poor 0-3 start, suffering a significant loss to Buffalo on Monday Night Football.

They need to turn things around quickly, or their season will be in jeopardy. More worrisome is QB Trevor Lawrence’s performance. He has not been impactful in the first three weeks, registering only 560 yards, two touchdowns, and one interception, with a completion percentage below 60% in each game.

This is particularly troubling for Jaguars fans given that Lawrence recently signed a substantial contract extension. This offseason, the Jaguars extended Lawrence’s contract for five years and $275 million, with $200 million guaranteed, which binds him and the team together for several years. The situation worsens with details highlighted by ESPN’s Dan Graziano.

The contract provided $142 million fully guaranteed at signing, which includes a $37.5 million signing bonus. However, only $1.5 million of his 2024 salary is guaranteed under the extension, leaving much of the financial obligation for future seasons. Lawrence is scheduled to receive significant guaranteed money, with $37 million due in both 2025 and 2026, and $29 million in 2027.

This setup almost guarantees that Lawrence will remain with the team. At just 25 years old, there is still hope for Lawrence to revitalize his shaky NFL career. However, it’s easy to foresee owner Shahid Khan potentially regretting this decision in a couple of years.
