The Jacksonville Jaguars have faced challenges with their secondary this season, particularly after cornerback Tyson Campbell was injured. However, Montaric Brown and Jarrian Jones have stepped up effectively. Darnell Savage, who joined the team in the offseason and has primarily played a nickel role, made a significant impact against the Miami Dolphins.
Defensive coordinator Ryan Nielsen emphasized the importance of having strong players like Savage. He expressed confidence in the team’s safeties, Andre Cisco and Antonio Johnson. “We’re doing pretty good back there. Physical. Physical,” Nielsen remarked. He acknowledged that Johnson, as a younger player, is still adjusting to being a starter in the NFL. As for Cisco, Nielsen noted, “He’s had a solid few games, aside from one play we’d like to forget.”
Cisco has recorded nine tackles in two starts, while Johnson has ten tackles, including one for a loss.
Looking ahead, the Jaguars will face a significant challenge against the Buffalo Bills, particularly due to quarterback Josh Allen. Unlike the Dolphins, whose threats come from their receivers and running backs, the Bills’ main danger lies in Allen’s exceptional skills.
Nielsen has observed that the Bills have been quickening Allen’s release, leading to more efficient passing. “He’s doing a really good job,” he said. “Their scheme is effective, especially on first and second downs with quick throws, which has improved his completion percentage. The offensive line is also performing well, allowing fewer batted passes.”
The safeties will play a critical role in limiting Allen’s effectiveness. If the Jaguars hope to avoid an 0-3 start, they need to contain his game.
