The Florida Panthers are actively seeking Professional Tryouts (PTOs) to enhance their forward depth following last season. According to David Dwork from The Hockey News, the Panthers have reached a PTO agreement with forward Matt Luff, who will join the team next week. Luff began his career with the Los Angeles Kings in 2016 after being signed from the Ontario Hockey League.
He had a strong season with the Hamilton Bulldogs, scoring 25 goals and 49 points in 45 games. Despite his larger frame, he struggled to utilize his size effectively, which raised questions about his fit in the Kings’ tough playing style.
Most of Luff’s time was spent with the Kings’ AHL affiliate, the Ontario Reign, but he played 64 games for Los Angeles between 2018-21, contributing 10 goals and 17 points. After a year with the Nashville Predators, he signed with the Detroit Red Wings, where he made 19 NHL appearances and scored two goals and four points. His most productive time was with the Grand Rapids Griffins, where he recorded 18 goals and 43 points over 54 games, despite facing injury challenges.
While it may be difficult for Luff to secure a spot in the revamped Panthers’ bottom-six, his recent AHL success has earned him this chance. The Panthers are looking to bolster their forward lineup, especially after a struggling scoring season in Charlotte last year. Luff will need to adopt a next-man-up mentality as he aims to join the roster of the defending Stanley Cup Champions.
