Stephen Peat, a former enforcer for the Washington Capitals, passed away due to injuries he sustained when he was struck by a car on August 30. He was 44 years old and had struggled with concussion issues and periods of homelessness after his hockey career.

The NHL Alumni Association expressed their sorrow in a statement, saying they were “heartbroken” to hear of his passing following the tragic accident.

On the morning of the accident at around 4:15 a.m., Langley police reported that a 44-year-old pedestrian suffered life-threatening injuries while crossing a road.

Standing at 6-foot-2 and weighing 230 pounds, Peat recorded eight goals, two assists, and 234 penalty minutes across 130 NHL games. He was drafted 32nd overall by Anaheim in 1998 before being traded to Washington in 2000.

In 2004-05, he played seven games for the Danbury Trashers in the United Hockey League, where he notched an assist and accumulated 45 penalty minutes. His last professional hockey appearance was in the 2006-07 season for Albany in the American Hockey League.
