BREAKING: New challenges as VCU Men’s basketball slate for non-conference

The Virginia Commonwealth University men’s basketball team is gearing up for the 2024-25 season after the release of their non-conference schedule this past Monday.

This newly announced schedule features a mix of high-profile matchups, crucial tournaments, and tough opponents that aim to establish the team’s performance in the Atlantic-10 conference.

Last season, the Rams finished with an 11-7 record in their non-conference games (VCU Athletics). Despite being projected to finish second in the Atlantic 10 rankings, they ended the season ranked No. 5 due to unexpected challenges like coaching changes, roster shifts, and injuries.

“It takes time to put all those pieces together and find a rhythm,” remarked head coach Ryan Odom.

This year’s non-conference schedule showcases a variety of opponents, including several teams ranked in the top 75 nationally and others that competed in last year’s March Madness.

Zeb Jackson, a graduate student guard and one of the team captains, emphasized the importance of making the most of these games before conference play, saying, “Not taking any team for granted.”

Key opponents and tournaments include:

  • Colorado State: Ranked No. 36 by the NCAA, known for their strong defensive play. Their impressive stats include 6.3 steals, 3.1 blocks, and 33.4 rebounds per game (CS Athletics, T).
  • New Mexico: Currently ranked No. 22, recognized for a high-paced, aggressive offense. Last year’s team averaged 67.7 points, 33.8 rebounds, and 11.2 assists per game (NMS Athletics).
  • Shriners Children Hospital Charleston Classic: Taking place in November, this tournament features several top teams, including Seton Hall, Florida Atlantic, and Miami, both of which had NCAA tournament appearances last year, presenting tough competition for VCU.

Coach Odom stated these games are critical for VCU’s March Madness qualification and overall tournament rankings, stressing the need to “take care of business.”

Jackson conveyed enthusiasm for the upcoming season, saying, “Expect a lot of excitement, love between teammates, and big accomplishments because we expect that from ourselves.”

With the transfer portal playing a crucial role, VCU has welcomed new players from Clemson, UT-Arlington, and several newcomers from Europe and freshmen, according to VCU Athletics.

Fans should brace for an exciting season ahead!
