The Detroit Red Wings are aiming to break their playoff drought, and a recent trade proposal suggests they could acquire a prominent defenseman.

Andersson is in the fifth year of a six-year, $27.3 million contract and is expected to serve as the second-pairing right-shot defenseman behind Moritz Seider, a top NHL defenseman. Last season, he played 78 games, scoring 9 goals and providing 30 assists for a total of 39 points. Throughout his eight-year career with the Flames, he has participated in 455 games, accumulating 36 goals and 164 assists for 200 points.
Red Wings’ Playoff Aspirations
The Red Wings have not qualified for the playoffs since the 2015-16 season and are in the midst of a rebuilding phase to rejuvenate their roster. With a core that includes Seider and Lucas Raymond, General Manager Steve Yzerman is optimistic about their chances of contending for a playoff spot.
“I believe we are among the teams that have a shot at making the playoffs,” Yzerman stated. “If we can maintain our health, have solid goaltending, and if some players exceed expectations, we could make it. Alternatively, we might fall short by just a point in the final game of the season. That’s the delicate balance we face. When I compare our current roster to last year’s, I see some differences that might create a better fit for the players’ roles.”
During the offseason, Detroit added Cam Talbot, Vladimir Tarasenko, Tyler Motte, and Erik Gustafsson to their lineup. They also re-signed Patrick Kane to provide veteran guidance to their younger squad.
The Red Wings will kick off their 2024-25 NHL season at home on October 10 against the Pittsburgh Penguins.
