Breaking news: Former Duke Star Delivers Good Omen in NC State Football Debut

Jordan Waters did not match the consistency of NC State football wide receiver KC Concepcion, who scored three touchdowns, during Thursday night’s game. The 6-foot, 224-pound graduate running back struggled in the first half, managing only 22 yards on 11 carries, which contributed to the Wolfpack’s early 14-7 deficit against Western Carolina, an FCS opponent.

Despite a slow start, NC State running back Jordan Waters exemplified the Wolfpack’s perseverance, helping power a 38-21 season-opening win over Western Carolina at Carter-Finley Stadium. Waters, a 23-year-old graduate transfer from Duke, matched the rushing yards he produced against NC State last season when the Blue Devils defeated the Wolfpack 24-3 at home.

Waters, a preseason Doak Walker Award candidate, spent five years at Duke, amassing 1,690 rushing yards[3]. Since arriving at NC State, it has been frequently mentioned that he managed to post the exact same rushing yard total against the Wolfpack in 2023 as he did in his debut game for the Wolfpack in 2024.

In a few columns, Jordan Waters surpassed his previous statistics that contributed to Duke’s success against NC State last November. His two touchdowns against the Catamounts tied his single-game record, which he achieved six times as a Blue Devil, and were one more than he scored against the 2023 Wolfpack defense in Durham.

Additionally, unlike his standout performance at Wallace Wade Stadium, Waters recorded one reception for 10 yards against Western Carolina.

“I was proud of Jordan Waters for responding because I don’t think he played well in the first half, but he bounced back,” said NC State head coach Dave Doeren in a post-game press conference. “It was great to see, and that’s what you look for in veteran players.”
