Breaking: Detroit Lions running back suggested as trade candidate by NFL analyst

Craig Reynolds and rookie Sione Vaki are expected to fill the last two spots on the depth chart when final cuts are made, but Jermar Jefferson has also been performing well this offseason and would likely secure a roster spot if not for the standout performances of Reynolds and Vaki.

Given the Lions’ depth at the position, Bleacher Report’s Ryan Fowler suggests that Detroit should consider placing Reynolds on the trade block before the season begins. With Montgomery and Gibbs firmly established as the starters and Vaki now in the mix, Reynolds’ role is likely to be limited this fall.

Trading Reynolds could create roster opportunities for younger players in other positions. He may also bring back a decent return, as teams are always looking for versatile depth at running back. While it’s possible that a team could express interest in Reynolds before the season starts, the Lions are unlikely to give him away, especially since he is the most experienced back on the bench.

Given that Montgomery and Gibbs both missed several games last season, having Reynolds as a solid backup could be more valuable to a team with Super Bowl aspirations than a late-round draft pick. For the Lions to consider trading Reynolds, they would need to feel confident in Vaki and Jefferson, who has only played seven career games and hasn’t seen action in the NFL since 2021. While a trade isn’t out of the question, it seems likely that the Lions will hold onto Reynolds.

It’s certainly plausible that a team might express interest in acquiring Reynolds before the season begins, but the Lions are not likely to let him go without a fair return. He is by far the most experienced running back on their bench.

Given that Montgomery and Gibbs missed several games last season, it’s entirely possible that could happen again. Reynolds provides a reliable insurance option, which may hold more value for a team with Super Bowl aspirations than a late-round draft pick.
