The University of Texas is facing a significant challenge in its running back depth following CJ Baxter’s season-ending knee injury.
On Monday, the situation worsened with the news that true freshman running back Christian Clark reportedly suffered what is thought to be a serious lower leg injury, although specific details were not available late Monday evening.
With Baxter unavailable, Jerrick Gibson has moved up the depth chart to RB4, positioning him for increased touches as the Longhorns adjust to Baxter’s absence. Clark was expected to back up junior Jaydon Blue, who was set to share carries with Baxter but will now take on a larger role, along with sophomore Tre Wisner and Gibson, another true freshman.
Clark’s injury has shifted the focus in a position group that is already missing its top player. The Longhorns had their first scrimmage on Saturday, which was a crucial checkpoint in fall camp and an opportunity for head coach Steve Sarkisian and his staff to evaluate the team’s situation without Baxter.
“I thought Jaydon played well, and Tre did a nice job too,” Sarkisian said during a Zoom call after practice on Monday. “Christian and Jerrick got their first taste of college football, but both had some mishaps, putting the ball on the ground once. Jaydon reminded them of what it was like during his first scrimmage, and CJ had to do the same.”
When asked about the possibility of moving a player from another position to bolster the running back depth, Sarkisian indicated that such decisions would be made after the first scrimmage. However, with Clark now sidelined, he may need to reconsider.
“We’re exploring different options, whether it’s a couple of guys from the offensive side or potentially a player from the defensive side,” Sarkisian explained. “We’re taking it day by day. We want to understand how any changes will affect other positions, not just find a quick fix at running back but also consider the broader implications for the team.”
