Missouri Tigers excited for a new season and new defensive coordinator

Columbia — The Missouri Tigers’ defense is undergoing a transformation with new faces, including their new defensive coordinator, Corey Batoon. Batoon has already made a positive impression on his players.

Graduate linebacker Chuck Hicks praised Batoon, saying, “He’s a great guy who can relate to us, and we can have good conversations both on and off the field.” Defensive tackle Chris McClellan echoed these sentiments, noting, “Coach Batoon is a great coach, and everything he’s done with the defense feels natural.” Senior safety Daylan Carnell added, “He’s very detail-oriented and emphasizes technique.”

Co-Defensive Coordinator D.J. Smith highlighted Batoon’s coaching abilities, stating, “He’s a great football coach, an excellent communicator, and a fantastic leader who develops young men.”

Batoon joins the Tigers after three successful seasons as the defensive coordinator at South Alabama, where the Jaguars ranked in the top 30 for fewest points and total yards allowed in 2023. However, he emphasizes that his approach focuses on player development rather than rigid schemes. “Scheme can be overrated; it’s about the players and how they develop,” Batoon explained.

As he acclimates to the Tigers’ culture, Batoon is eager to learn from his staff and the players. Smith noted that Batoon wanted to understand their traditions, particularly the “Death Row” defense, known for its commitment to stopping the run.

With fall camp underway, Batoon welcomes the changes, stating, “Change is constant, and being ready for it is what fall camp is all about. That’s the beauty of this process.” As the Tigers gear up for the season, they are excited about the fresh perspectives Batoon brings to the team.
