If there was a standout in the Season 6 premiere of Maryland football’s “UNLOCKED” documentary series, it was clearly Jordan Phillips.
The redshirt sophomore defensive lineman, now in his second year with the Terps after transferring from Tennessee, is poised to become a breakout star. He recently made Bruce Feldman’s “Freaks List” and attended Big Ten Media Days in Indianapolis last month. His strong work ethic was highlighted
Phillips’ moment in the spotlight began with a scene of him training solo in Jones-Hill House.
“Everyday I gotta look at myself in the mirror, and I gotta ask myself that question, like, did I give today my all?” Phillips said. “But I approach every day with reckless abandonment. And what I mean by that is just like, don’t think about nothing, just give it your all. Nobody in college football will outwork me. And I say that with all humbleness in me. I don’t care who you are, where you from, you know what I’m saying. I’ll make it my personal mission to outwork everybody.”
Another scene featured Phillips arriving at the facility at 3:50 a.m. He entered a room alone, where he would blast music, put on his headphones, and focus on watching film. This segment specifically showed him analyzing Green Bay Packers defensive tackle Kenny Clark.
“Typically, we get in pretty early, and we’ll be around the building in that office,” said Chad Wells, the team’s director of technology. “We’re located right above the defensive line room, and it’s not unusual to hear loud music coming from there.
“Jordan Phillips is in there studying tape. I don’t think I’ve ever seen someone his age dedicate as much time to watching film.”
The episode also revisited the Music City Bowl, featuring an intro from head coach Mike Locksley, who stated that the next season begins when the current season’s bowl is announced. The bowl game footage included an intense pregame speech from Brian Williams and highlights from Maryland’s 31-13 victory over Auburn.
Additionally, the episode showcased aspects of the Terp Time offseason program, emphasizing a strong message from Locksley and giving much-deserved recognition to director of football strength and conditioning Ryan Davis.
