After the Los Angeles Dodgers suffered a 6-5 walk-off defeat against their divisional rivals, the San Diego Padres, on Tuesday, fans quickly took to X (formerly Twitter) to criticize manager Dave Roberts for his mishandling of the game and other errors. To make things worse, the Dodgers had been performing well after the MLB All-Star Break but failed to maintain that momentum, ultimately losing to a key rival.
Dodgers fans are criticizing Dave Roberts harshly
Many negative comments on social media centered around Roberts’ alleged mismanagement of the game. “Dave Roberts needs a neurological exam,” Sloan Piva remarked on X, noting that he attempted to approach the mound after his pitching coach had just visited with the bases loaded in the 10th inning. This mistake resulted in Dodgers pitcher Alex Vesia being “charged with a ball due to the violation,” allowing Donovan Solano to hit a “walk-off hit.”
Mickey Koke expressed his frustration more bluntly, stating, “Dave Roberts is f**king dumb.” Another post on X claimed that Roberts “should have been let go years ago,” pointing out that despite managing a talent-rich roster, he has only led the team to one World Series title in 2020. The post further argued, “If he can’t win it this year with everything this roster has when healthy, he needs to be fired.”
This dissatisfaction is understandable given how the Dodgers began the game, scoring five runs early against Matt Waldron. However, they struggled to maintain that momentum and faltered toward the end.
The game began with Shohei Ohtani drawing a walk, followed by Will Smith stealing second base, placing runners on the corners. Gavin Lux then drove in the first run with a sacrifice fly. However, Manny Machado’s homer in the second inning sparked the Padres’ comeback, as they added two more runs after a couple of doubles, closing the gap to 5-3.
