Royals Bolster Rotation with Acquisition of Michael Lorenzen
In a move aimed at strengthening their starting rotation, the Kansas City Royals have acquired right-handed pitcher Michael Lorenzen from the Texas Rangers. The trade, announced on July 29, 2024, saw the Royals send left-hander Walter Pennington to the Rangers in exchange for Lorenzen’s services.
Lorenzen, a veteran of seven MLB seasons, has been a consistent presence on the mound, posting a career ERA of 4.07 and a WHIP of 1.31. The 32-year-old has spent the majority of his career with the Cincinnati Reds before joining the Rangers in 2023. This season, Lorenzen has made 21 starts for Texas, recording a 4.54 ERA and a 1.32 WHIP.
The Royals, currently sitting at 50-54 and 5.5 games back in the AL Central, are hoping that Lorenzen’s addition will provide a much-needed boost to their playoff aspirations. With the trade deadline looming, Kansas City has made it clear that they are willing to make moves to improve their team and compete in the competitive American League.
