The New Orleans Saints did not re-sign Michael Thomas during free agency. This choice followed a revised, one-year contract they offered him for 2023, which ended up being largely ineffective as he played in only seven games that season.
After the season concluded, it became apparent that a return was unlikely. While many expected him to join another NFL team relatively soon, no opportunities materialized in the early part of the offseason.
It’s unclear how much interest the veteran wide receiver generated within the league
Will Thomas sign with an NFL team before the regular season starts? Time is running short for him, as the preseason is only a little over two weeks away and training camp has already started.
As the 2024 NFL training camp begins, Michael Thomas remains unsigned
The experienced wide receiver voiced his frustrations on social media throughout the 2023 season, largely targeting the Saints organization. He was unhappy with the coaching staff’s choices and had disagreements over his medical care while on the team.
Moreover, Thomas indirectly criticized quarterback Derek Carr several times. Being known for his candidness, it’s unlikely that Thomas will alter this behavior, regardless of which team he may join—or if he joins any team at all.

Are his off-field antics affecting his contract situation? It’s a possibility, but Thomas has also been largely unavailable in recent years. He might be seeking a salary that teams are hesitant to meet, especially given his injury history.
In 2020, he played only seven games, and he sat out the entire 2021 season with New Orleans. Over the 2022 and 2023 seasons, he managed to play just thirteen games in total.
Overall, it’s notable that there hasn’t been much buzz around Thomas this offseason. He has mostly stayed quiet on social media, and no teams have been significantly connected to him in reports.
As we look ahead to 2024, it seems increasingly unlikely that he will find an opportunity. He may have to settle for a low-cost deal with a team that suffers injuries in their wide receiver group during the season.
