Memphis won’t face UNT at Super Pit in men’s basketball in notable twist to AAC hoops slate

North Texas is set to confront defending American Athletic Conference tournament titleholder UAB in both home and away games in the upcoming men’s basketball season.

This matchup stands out among the conference pairings just unveiled for UNT’s men’s and women’s basketball teams.

Notably missing from Mean Green’s schedule is a home game against Memphis in men’s basketball.

With a star-studded roster and renowned coach Penny Hardaway, the Tigers boast considerable prominence in the league.

Mean Green will have a balanced schedule, playing six opponents both at home and on the road, three solely at home, and three exclusively on the road.

Memphis is one of the three teams UNT will only face away from home.

Last season, one of Mean Green’s notable victories was a 76-66 triumph over the Tigers at the Super Pit, attracting a crowd of 5,689. The game against SMU drew even more fans at 7,239, marking UNT’s highest attendance for a home game last season.

In addition to UAB, North Texas will go up against Florida Atlantic, Rice, Temple, UTSA, and Wichita State in both home and away matchups.

UNT will have home matchups against Charlotte, Tulsa, and Tulane, and will travel to East Carolina and South Florida for individual games.

Last season, the Mean Green men ended with a 19-15 record, reaching the second round of the National Invitation Tournament with a loss to Seton Hall in Ross Hodge’s first year as head coach.

On the other hand, under Jason Burton’s guidance in his inaugural season, the UNT women’s team achieved success, clinching a share of the AAC regular-season title and finishing 23-9, eventually participating in the Women’s Basketball Invitational.

Similar to the men’s team, the Mean Green women will only face one intriguing opponent on the road, which is UTSA in San Antonio, led by Karen Aston, who had a brief stint at UNT in the 2011-2012 season.

The UNT women will play South Florida, Memphis, Rice, Tulane, Tulsa, and Wichita State in both home and away games.

Temple, UAB, and Charlotte will visit UNT for their sole matchups this season, while Mean Green will head to East Carolina and Florida Atlantic for single games in addition to playing UTSA away.

The complete schedules for both the UNT men’s and women’s teams will be disclosed at a later date.
