The LSU football team will have a new roster going into the 2024 campaign. Quarterback Jaylen Daniels, the Heisman Trophy winner and the second overall pick of the Washington Commanders in the 2024 NFL Draft, is the most noteworthy player leaving. There are new coaches on the staff as well because Kelly fired a lot of the previous ones after the ReliaQuest Bowl victory over Wisconsin.
According to Brett McMurphy of The Action Network, LSU head coach Brian Kelly made a major announcement during SEC Media Days that revealed his expectations for the Tigers in 2024.
“I work without expectations. Are we taking the required actions to maintain our progress? Are we getting closer to our end objectives? We are in the third year. This group is now more responsible than it has ever been. Our crew has never been deeper than it is now.
Kelly, who left Notre Dame in an unexpected move, is starting his third season in Baton Route, so that’s a strong claim. Despite having one of the best offenses in the league in 2023 according to several statistical measures, LSU finished 10-3 overall and 6-2 in SEC play, sharing fifth place in the conference with Ole Miss and Missouri.
Last season, the LSU football squad only suffered three losses. They were only one or two wins away from being the best team in the SEC, having lost to Ole Miss and Alabama after one of those came to Florida State in the first game.
However, Kelly saw that they needed to improve, and he thought back to the 2023 season, according to Matthew Brune of On3.
“Playing for championships and making the playoffs is the benchmark, and we didn’t meet it, but winning 10 games is never easy to achieve.” We had to improve because, at the end of the day, I let go of my whole defensive staff.
Along with Daniels, Malik Nabers and Brian Thomas Jr. are gone from the explosive offensive trio from the previous season, therefore there are some anticipation that the offense will regress. However, some fresh faces on that side as well as the new defensive coaching staff may prove beneficial in the long run.
It will be intriguing to watch how Garrett Nussmeier performs in Daniels’ place as LSU’s starting quarterback this season. Overall, a lot has changed, but Kelly’s claim that this is their most cohesive team to date garnered notice.
The LSU football team plays South Carolina, Nicholls, and USC in Las Vegas to start the season before traveling to play UCLA and South Alabama. The Tigers’ SEC schedule keeps them from playing at Georgia, Texas, Tennessee, and Missouri, but in the last month of the season, they take on Alabama and Oklahoma. Whether this Tigers roster in 2024 is the best since Brian Kelly left South Bend is a question that will need to be answered over time.
