The Philadelphia Eagles roster for the 2024 NFL season is almost complete as at this late stage of the summer. But before training camp officially begins later this month, the team still has time to sign one or more free agents.
The Eagles have a few places that would likely benefit from some extra depth, and there are still some good players on the market. Having said that, Philadelphia may still try to sign these three sleeper free agents.
The Eagles could benefit from adding experienced wide receiver Hunter Renfrow, especially in light of DeVonte Parker’s unexpected retirement. Parker was projected to be the team’s third wide receiver. Renfrow would line up as a slot receiver in Philadelphia since he has experience there. He would also benefit from playing with players like DeVonta Smith and A.J. Brown, who would offer up opportunities for him in the middle of the field.
Although Renfrow has only once in his career surpassed 1,000 receiving yards in a season, the Eagles wouldn’t absolutely need him to produce large stats. All they would need was for him to be a viable alternative. Given that he is still only 28 years old and has more experience than most of the other receivers on Philly’s roster, he should still have plenty of successful football seasons ahead of him.
How about a receiver who already knows the squad and organization, if not Renfrow? While he didn’t exactly blow everyone away while he was in Philadelphia last season, Julio Jones did demonstrate his continued effectiveness as a pass-catcher—particularly in the red zone—with three touchdown grabs in 11 games. Jones is a dependable veteran who would gain from starting next to Brown and Smith once more.
The Eagles made improving the secondary a top priority this summer, and they succeeded in doing so by selecting Quinyon Mitchell and Cooper DeJean and bringing C.J. Gardner-Johnson back. However, they may still want to add more quality to the secondary. Though he’s currently searching for a new NFL home, Pro Bowl safety Justin Simmons has frequently been described as having his sights set on the Eagles.
Not only is Simmons a superb player, but he also played for the Broncos from 2019 to 2021, where Vic Fangio, the new defensive coordinator for the Eagles, was the head coach. Similar to how Simmons’ familiarity with the system may help him succeed in a new environment, Fangio may find it easier to execute his system with a new squad if he has an experienced player on the roster.
