Oklahoma State football coach Mike Gundy may have acknowledged his own extensive history of driving under the influence while discussing a player’s recent DUI arrest.
On July 2, running back Ollie Gordon was charged with driving under the influence after the Oklahoma Highway Patrol observed him swerving into the adjacent lane while driving 82 miles per hour in a 65 mph zone. When stopped, troopers detected the smell of alcohol.
Gordon confessed to having open bottles of vodka and tequila but declined a sobriety test. He was then taken to the Cleveland County Jail where his blood alcohol levels measured 0.11 and 0.10 — 0.03 and 0.02 over the legal limit in Oklahoma, respectively.
During an interview with ESPN, Gundy discussed Gordon’s arrest and the decision not to suspend him. He mentioned looking up the legal alcohol limit in Oklahoma and reflected that based on body weight, he himself might have driven under the influence many times in his life without facing consequences. Gundy also emphasized that Gordon was fortunate that no one was injured.
Following criticism for his remarks, Gundy took to social media to clarify that his intended point was that everyone makes mistakes.
“My intended point today at Big 12 media days was that we are all guilty of making bad decisions,” Gundy said. “It was not a reference to something specific.”
