Just In: Georgia Tech Yellow Jackets Fast Rising-Star Heading To Olympics

Georgia Tech Yellow Jackets Get Another First Olympian

A former volleyball player for Georgia Tech, has secured a spot on the 2024 Brazilian National Team Olympic roster, as announced by the Brazilian Volleyball Federation. Bergmann, who achieved All-American status three times and holds the program record for highest scoring average (4.31 kills/set), is the first athlete from the Georgia Tech volleyball program to compete in the Olympics.

She will join the Brazilian team, one of the top medal contenders, in the upcoming Paris 2024 Olympic Games, which will be broadcasted on NBC later this month.

Heading into the Olympics, Brazil ranks as the second-best team in the world, behind Italy. They will commence their Olympic journey against Kenya in Pool B on July 29 at 1 pm local time (7 am ET). The group stage presents a tough challenge as Poland, fresh off a victory over Brazil for 3rd place in the Volleyball Nations League, and Japan, VNL runners-up and conquerors of Brazil in the semifinals, are also in Pool B.

Paris 2024 – Game Schedule

Brazil, who finished as the Silver Medalists in the 2021 Olympics after losing to the United States in the Gold Medal game, has a history of two gold medals, achieved in Beijing (2008) and London (2012), with Georgia Tech associate head coach Claudio Pinheiro as part of the coaching staff for both victories.

Bergmann clinched her spot on the 13-player roster with an impressive showing in the Volleyball Nations League earlier this summer. Throughout the month-long tournament, she competed in seven matches, tallying 39 kills, 11 aces, and five blocks. Her standout performance included four aces and 12 kills in Brazil’s Week 3 win over Poland, contributing to her strong finish with 26 kills and 10 aces in her final three VNL matches.

Among the 13-player roster, Bergmann is one of three outside hitters, alongside veteran Gabriela ‘Gabi’ Guimarães and 20-year-old Ana Cristina Souza, both of whom were part of the Silver Medal squad in Tokyo. Bergmann is one of six players on the roster who will be making their Olympic debut.

The Paris Summer Olympics 2024 will take place from July 26 to August 11 and will be broadcasted on NBC. The women’s volleyball competition will kick off with pool play from July 28 to August 4, followed by the knockout round (quarterfinals, semifinals, and medal matches) from August 6 to 11. All matches will be aired on NBC, USA Network, E!, and available for streaming on Peacock and NBC Olympics platforms.
