Just in: “Huge Boost” as NY Giants head coach Brian Daboll announced the signing of veteran cornerback

The cornerback, entering his seventh year in the league, recently participated in a tryout with the New York Giants.

Following the team’s prior unsuccessful attempts to acquire experienced cornerbacks this offseason, General Manager Joe Schoen of the NY Giants has successfully sealed a deal. Notably, Schoen and his team invited cornerback Tre Herndon for a tryout during minicamp.

Impressing observers in East Rutherford, Herndon’s performance made it an effortless decision for Schoen to extend a contract offer. As reported by ESPN’s Jordan Raanan, Herndon is set to sign a one-year agreement and will be back on the field with the Giants once training camp commences.

The New York Giants have secured veteran cornerback Tre Herndon on a one-year contract

During minicamp, Herndon made a standout play by intercepting a tipped pass thrown by Tommy DeVito and running it back for a touchdown. Perhaps this impressive display was what convinced Schoen to finalize the deal. While the certainty remains unknown, it certainly bolstered Herndon’s position.

Herndon, who previously played six seasons with the Jaguars, will now be joining the Giants for his seventh year. In 2023, the 5-11, 190-pound cornerback participated in 16 games, starting four. He recorded 46 tackles, deflected nine passes, and forced one fumble.

Over his career, Herndon has played in 83 games and started 34. Although he is not anticipated to compete for a starting spot, his addition provides much-needed depth in the cornerback group. Deonte Banks is established as the primary cornerback, with Cor’Dale Flott likely starting as the second cornerback.

Flott is heading into his third year, while Banks is entering his second season with the Giants. The secondary, under the guidance of Brian Daboll and new defensive coordinator Shane Bowen, is relatively young. Herndon’s experience brings valuable depth to the team, addressing the void left by the departures of Tre’Davious White, Steven Nelson, and Darious Williams during the offseason.
