The Cleveland Guardians are eagerly awaiting their opponent in the ALDS. Fortunately, they’ve secured a top-two seed in the American League, giving them time to rest and prepare for the playoffs. A key uncertainty surrounding their playoff matchup is the status of veteran pitcher Alex Cobb.
He’s been dealing with a blister on his throwing hand but is making a strong effort to return to the mound. The Guardians would greatly benefit from his presence if he can recover in time. Team manager Stephen Vogt recently provided a brief update on Cobb’s condition. “The only update on Alex is that he’s trending really well.”
He threw off the mound today and then he’ll be throwing a sim game, I believe on Thursday.” While the update was quite general, it offers some optimism. Vogt’s comment that Cobb is “trending really well” indicates there’s a chance he could return to the team soon. Since joining Cleveland before the MLB trade deadline, Cobb made three regular-season starts, achieving a 2-1 record with a 2.76 ERA, a 1.04 WHIP, a 3.3 K/BB ratio, and logging 16.1 innings pitched. When he was on the field, he performed impressively.
The Guardians will need him if they’re aiming for a successful postseason run. At 36, Cobb may also be eyeing a future with the team. Cleveland will need starting pitchers for next season and may look to re-sign him if he recovers and performs well in the playoffs. That appears to be his goal. We hope to hear a more encouraging update about Cobb soon and that he’ll be ready to contribute in their ALDS playoff series.
