At long last, Kelly Akharaiyi is playing football games again.
The Irving, Texas native has been passionate about the game since childhood. He made a significant impact at UTEP, and his performance at Mississippi State has been eagerly awaited for months.
However, after a strong spring and early summer, Akharaiyi faced a setback. He missed the last few weeks of training camp and was held out of the season opener as a precaution. Last week, he made his return.
“It feels great. It’s been a long time coming trying to get back on the field and getting right in the training room, so I’m happy,” Akharaiyi said. “Ain’t no rust. It’s just one of those things where you’ve got to take care of your body and go out there and make plays. That’s what we do here.”
Akharaiyi ready to shine at Davis Wade Stadium
Although Akharaiyi only recorded one catch for 18 yards in his return, it marked an important start for him. Being back on the field with his teammates and playing the game he loves was fulfilling enough.
Even during his absence, the talented playmaker contributed as a leader. In the Bulldogs’ 56-7 victory, he was very active on the sidelines, celebrating with teammates and staying engaged with his fellow receivers.
“Of course, I wanted to play, but watching my brothers have fun and make plays fired me up,” Akharaiyi said about his mindset during the first game. “Nobody likes being on the sidelines—I want to be out there. But it was great to see them take care of business.”
In the first two games, State’s receivers have received plenty of opportunities.
Akharaiyi’s teammates Kevin Coleman and Jordan Mosley have led in production, each with nine catches for a combined 392 yards and three touchdowns. The Lebby offense is creating chances for everyone, and Akharaiyi believes his time is coming.
“With Lebby’s offense, everyone’s going to eat,” Akharaiyi remarked. “I’m not selfish. If my brothers are making plays and having fun, I’ll enjoy it with them.”
Akharaiyi and his teammates look forward to their next opportunity this Saturday.
The Bulldogs will host Toledo (2-0) at 6:30 p.m. Akharaiyi and the wide receivers have studied the Rockets closely and recognize the challenge posed by their secondary.
“We can’t overlook their history,” Akharaiyi noted about Toledo. “They have the accolades and experience, so they’ll come ready to play, and we need to be prepared too.”
Akharaiyi is eager for this moment. The senior wide receiver has been anticipating the chance to step onto the field and play in front of cheering fans.
This Saturday marks his first chance to compete in a game that counts, and he finds it hard to contain his excitement.
“When we walked out for that first game, I thought, ‘I can’t wait to be back,’” Akharaiyi shared. “The atmosphere was incredible. Putting on my pads and playing alongside my teammates is going to feel amazing.”
