UConn revealed on Tuesday that Geno Auriemma, the women’s basketball coach, has agreed to a five-year contract extension.

I am grateful for the chance to keep collaborating with Geno Auriemma and his team to contribute to the existing pinnacle of achievements,” stated athletic director David Benedict. “Coach Auriemma has devoted more than half of his life to UConn and our women’s basketball program, and he will certainly be recognized as one of the most exceptional collegiate coaches in history.

“His impact, commitment, and allegiance to this university and state are invaluable and will be essential as we step into the most transformative era in college athletics over the last 40 years.

The school has confirmed the contract, which binds Auriemma to the program until the 2028-29 season, is valued at 18.7400,000.

Following their 23rd Final Four appearance since Auriemma’s arrival in 1985, the Huskies are in high spirits. Star guard Paige Bueckers will return for another year, and UConn has secured commitments from three of the top 11 players (Sarah Strong, Allie Ziebell, and Morgan Cheli) in HoopGurlz’s 2024 recruiting rankings.

The future at Storrs appears promising.

Despite lingering questions about Auriemma’s longevity due to his age (70) and the fast-evolving landscape of college sports, with renowned coaches like Alabama’s Nick Saban, Syracuse’s Jim Boeheim, and Duke’s Mike Krzyzewski retiring in recent years, some have pondered how much longer Auriemma will remain at the helm.

Auriemma has expressed his discontent with the significant changes that have reshaped the athletic environment.
