JUST IN: Vikings Star Demands Respect From Fans Amid Last Season Outing.

Despite their lackluster 7-10 record at the end of the season, the 2023 Vikings had some compelling tales. It was entertaining to watch Joshua Dobbs’ brief heroics and Ivan Pace’s transition into a three-down linebacker. It didn’t take Jordan Addison long to become Justin Jefferson’s reliable wingman.

The unique defensive strategy Brian Flores employed was another intriguing component. At a historical pace, the coordinator sent out blitzes and three-man rushes. In 2023, Josh Metellus, a gentlemen star, benefited from his unconventional gaming ideas.

Before Flores arrived, the safety had been a solid backup and an ace on special teams, but with the coach inside the building, his role took a dramatic turn. Metellus had the opportunity to play alongside fellow safeties Harrison Smith and Cam Bynum because of his philosophy of starting his best players on the field regardless of position.

His defensive versatility garnered some attention, but not nearly enough, it seems. Metellus was not ranked in the top 10 by ESPN when they announced their yearly safety rankings, which could make sense. He was not, however, included among “those who received votes” or given an honorable mention. ESPN listed 26 players as safety; Metellus was not one of them.

Metellus played in all 17 games, accumulating 1,065 defensive plays (94 percent of total defensive plays). He continued to dominate in that phase, adding 194 on special teams.

Along with 116 tackles, one interception, and the first 2.5 sacks of his career, he produced. In addition, Metellus forced four fumbles.

Those were all great numbers that made him recognizable. But it only partially illustrates his worth. All throughout the field, the safety can line up. On his CV, he lists his positions as an outside cornerback, slot cornerback, edge rusher, defensive lineman, and linebacker. In part because Metellus is such a versatile player, Flores can be inventive with his defensive strategy. He refused to take the roses when a fan told him that his adaptability is what makes him so brilliant.

Nevertheless, he was selected as an All-Pro and became a Pro Bowl substitute due to his performance.

Flores will remain a key member of the defense if he stays put this offseason. It’s possible that he is gradually replacing Smith on certain reps. A few more plays off would be beneficial for the 35-year-old. Still, the Vikings boast one of the best safety groupings in the National Football League.

It’s interesting that Bynum and Smith received no votes for ESPN’s list as well. 2023 was Bynum’s breakout year as he recorded the most tackles on the squad. Despite being past his prime, Smith is still a useful player. It might be argued that he won the game against the Carolina Panthers on his own last season.

Metellus, 26, is the captain of the team and has two more seasons left on his deal.
