BREAKING: Tigers sign Another catcher released by Red Sox to minor-league deal

The Detroit Tigers have inked catcher Stephen Scott to a minor-league deal and designated him to Double-A Erie.

At 26 years old, Scott is one of the two catchers listed on the Seawolves’ Opening Day lineup, alongside Eliezer Alfonzo, who recently participated in spring training with the Tigers.

Originally selected by the Boston Red Sox in the 10th round of the 2019 draft from Vanderbilt University, Scott advanced to Triple-A Worcester last season, where he recorded an .808 OPS with 13 home runs in 254 plate appearances.

Following his release by the Red Sox at the conclusion of spring training, Scott promptly signed with the Tigers. While he is versatile, having experience at first base and in the outfield, it seems that his primary role at the moment will be as a catcher.

The Tigers’ deployment of catchers at the start of the season is as follows:

  • Detroit: Jake Rogers, Carson Kelly
  • Triple-A Toledo: Dillon Dingler, Anthony Bemboom
  • Double-A Erie: Alfonzo, Scott
  • Class A (advanced) West Michigan: Jose Sibrian, Josh Crouch, Archer Brookman
