Astros Re-Sign Miguel Diaz To Minor League Contract

The Houston Astros have brought back reliever Miguel Díaz on a minor league contract, according to Chandler Rome of the Athletic. Díaz, who recently became a free agent after being removed from the MLB roster, quickly re-signed with the team and has been designated to Triple-A Sugar Land.

Having only made one appearance with the Astros after being claimed from the Tigers last week, Díaz was removed from the roster when Blair Henley was called up for a start. Since Díaz has no more minor league options, he had to be designated for assignment to be removed from the major league team.

Previously selected in the Rule 5 draft by the Padres, Díaz struggled initially in the MLB due to his limited experience above High-A level. However, he showed promise during a brief stint with the Tigers in 2022-23, although he went unclaimed on waivers after being designated by the Astros.

Despite his 5.05 ERA with Detroit’s top affiliate last season, Díaz’s 28.6% strikeout rate was above league average, indicating potential for improvement. He will aim to build on this performance with Sugar Land and possibly earn a return to the majors, especially with the Astros relying heavily on their bullpen recently.
