The Los Angeles Rams shared significant news on Wednesday.
Head coach Sean McVay informed the media that Matthew Stafford will sit out the game against the Seattle Seahawks on Sunday, with backup quarterback Jimmy Garoppolo taking the lead.
If Seattle wins their matchup on Sunday, both the Rams and Seahawks will have 10-7 records. However, the Rams have already secured the NFC West title due to a tiebreaker based on strength of victories against Seattle, which has led them to prioritize Stafford’s health.
As they head into Week 18, the Rams are positioned third in the NFC. A loss, combined with a win by the Tampa Bay Buccaneers, could drop them to the fourth spot and set up a challenging playoff matchup at home against the loser of the Detroit Lions vs. Minnesota Vikings game on Sunday night. The Buccaneers are scheduled to play the struggling New Orleans Saints in Week 18.
Garoppolo, in his first season with the Rams, has yet to see any game action this year.
