Garcia throws 4 TD passes, defense makes up for 6 East Carolina turnovers in rout of Norfolk State

Jake Garcia threw four touchdown passes as East Carolina triumphed over Norfolk State 42-3 in their season opener on Saturday night, despite committing six turnovers.

Garcia, who transferred from Missouri, completed 23 of 36 passes for 308 yards and rushed for an additional 39 yards, although he also threw three interceptions. He connected with Desirrio Riles for two touchdowns, while Anthony Smith and Casey Kelly each caught one. Javious Bond contributed a rushing touchdown as well. The Pirates lost three fumbles during the game.

East Carolina amassed 506 yards of total offense, significantly outpacing the Spartans, who managed only 114 yards. Norfolk State struggled on third downs, converting just one out of 18 attempts.

A highlight for the Pirates was Gavin Gibson’s 30-yard interception return for a touchdown, which extended their lead to 21-6 and helped them to a 28-3 advantage at halftime.
