3 players Seahawks must avoid in 2024 NFL Draft

Over the recent years, the Seattle Seahawks have undergone significant changes as a franchise. Following Russell Wilson’s departure in 2022, the team transitioned to Geno Smith as their new quarterback. Despite a solid performance in 2023, the Seahawks fell short of reaching the playoffs, leading to the dismissal of longtime head coach Pete Carroll. Mike Macdonald was appointed as his successor.

Seattle continues to face the strong competition of the San Francisco 49ers within their division, but remains a contender for an NFC wild card spot each season. A strong performance in the upcoming NFL Draft could mark the initial move towards establishing a new era of success for the Seahawks.

Quinyon Mitchell is undeniably a standout prospect, often regarded alongside Alabama’s Terrion Arnold as top cornerbacks in the draft deserving of an early first-round selection. However, Seattle should steer clear of drafting Mitchell due to their current lack of need for a premier cornerback.Last year, the Seahawks used the fifth overall pick on Devon Witherspoon and acquired Riq Woolen in the fifth round of the 2022 draft, forming a promising duo of young cornerbacks. While strong secondary play is crucial in today’s NFL, investing the 16th overall pick in a player who may not immediately start in their first year might not align with the team’s best interests, especially when there are pressing needs at other positions on the roster.

Amarius Mims – T – Georgia

 

Amarius Mims possesses exceptional athleticism, standing at an impressive 6’8″ and weighing 340lbs, with arms measuring over 36 inches. While Mims may lack experience, his immense potential makes him a captivating choice for teams seeking an offensive lineman, particularly those confident in their ability to develop his skills. However, Mims may not be the ideal selection for the Seahawks. Seattle urgently requires interior offensive linemen, whereas Mims is primarily projected as a tackle in the NFL. The Seahawks would be better off targeting local prospects like Taliese Fuaga from Oregon State or Troy Fautanu from the University of Washington.

Darius Robinson – DE – Missouri

 

Darius Robinson is a versatile defensive lineman who can align on the edge and shift inside, making him an intriguing prospect. However, Robinson is expected to be selected before the third round, potentially requiring the Seahawks to use their first-round pick to secure him. Utilizing the 16th overall selection on Robinson, a versatile tweener, might not be the most strategic move given the abundance of talented pass rushers and edge defenders in this year’s draft. If the Seahawks prioritize pass rusher, they should consider selecting the best available player at pick 16. Additionally, investing in a skilled interior offensive lineman and building depth at edge defender in the middle rounds could be a more prudent approach.
