3 managers on the Reds target list after firing David Bell

The Cincinnati Reds have officially fired their manager, David Bell, after 865 games with the team. So, who should they target next?

Throughout the season, there has been speculation about whether the Reds would dismiss their current manager, David Bell. On one hand, the Reds were not winning at the pace desired by the front office. On the other hand, injuries and underperformance by players were significant factors, and it’s hard to blame the manager for that.

Ultimately, Cincinnati made the decision to part ways with Bell with only a few games remaining in the 2024 season. While this decision was largely anticipated, the timing is somewhat unusual, as the team could have waited for the season’s conclusion before making the change.

Moving forward, the Reds will be looking for a long-term managerial option this offseason. They need a manager who can align with their style of play and the young talent within the organization.

3. Barry Larkin
The first name on the list is the Reds’ all-time great shortstop, Barry Larkin, who has been considered for the managerial position for the past five to six years.

Although Larkin has previously rejected the idea of managing, choosing to focus on player development and commentary, he has acknowledged that many younger players have expressed their desire for him to take over as manager. This rumor has persisted within the organization for years. Larkin has a strong connection with the players and a deep love for the game. He possesses the knowledge and leadership necessary for the role, and as a notorious winner, he has critiqued Cincinnati’s complacency in the league. While hiring Larkin would be an intriguing option, his lack of managerial experience may not align with the Reds’ “win now” mentality following Bell’s dismissal.

2. Mark Kotsay
Next is Mark Kotsay, currently the manager of the Oakland Athletics. With Oakland undergoing a transformation and likely relocation, Kotsay is expected to leave the team at the end of the season.

While some may note Kotsay’s poor managerial record, it reflects more on the roster he’s managed rather than on his skills. Many believe the A’s have overachieved this season, despite recent struggles.

Although Kotsay wouldn’t represent the significant upgrade the Reds seek, he could be a viable option, albeit a lateral move rather than progress from David Bell. He is one of the better managers available but may not be Cincinnati’s preferred choice, moving away from the internal hiring that many fans support.

1. Skip Schumaker

Topping the list is Skip Schumaker, the current manager of the Miami Marlins. Recent reports indicate that he’s expected to inform the Marlins of his decision to leave after the season, making him a highly sought-after managerial candidate.

Schumaker has garnered respect for his strategic decisions, including a notable moment where he chose not to pitch around Shohei Ohtani during a historic 50-homer, 50-steal achievement. His reputation as a player’s manager who holds his team accountable makes him an appealing option for the Reds.

There are several reasons why Schumaker is an excellent fit for Cincinnati:

  1. Youthful Approach: As a younger manager, he aligns with the modern era of baseball, matching the Reds’ fast and energetic style.
  2. Familiarity with Cincinnati: Having spent his last two seasons as a player in Cincinnati, he knows the city, the front office, and the fans, which can help him hit the ground running.
  3. Accountability: Schumaker isn’t one to shy away from calling out players when necessary, an important trait for fostering the development of the team’s younger members.

Despite being Cincinnati’s top choice, it’s important to note that Schumaker will likely be the first pick for many teams looking for a new manager. The competition could be fierce
