3 long-term managers Barnsley should consider after Neill Collins decision

Barnsley Officially Announce Neill Collins Departure Amid Poor Form

The Championship club Barnsley has appointed Martin Devaney as the interim manager for their upcoming match against Northampton Town, which will take place at their home ground.

Currently occupying the 5th position in the League One standings, Barnsley faces the possibility of slipping out of the top six if they suffer a defeat this weekend and other teams secure victories. Here are three potential managerial candidates for the club to consider…

Grant McCann

Doncaster Rovers, led by McCann, are currently on a nine-game winning streak in League Two. With his experience of winning the third tier title with Hull City in 2021, McCann could be a valuable addition to Barnsley’s management team as they aim to return to the Championship. Additionally, McCann’s son, Bayley, is a member of Barnsley’s Under-18 squad, which could be an added incentive for the club to consider hiring him.

Michael Duff

An opportunity has arisen for the Yorkshire team to potentially rehire Duff. He guided them to the playoff final last season, where they were defeated by Sheffield Wednesday at Wembley, prompting his departure when Swansea City offered him a position.

Michael Duff, the former manager of Cheltenham Town, was dismissed from his position in South Wales earlier this season. Since then, he has been without a job and may be open to the possibility of returning to Barnsley, where he previously led the team to the playoff final last year before they lost to Sheffield Wednesday at Wembley.

Gareth Ainsworth

Gareth Ainsworth, who is 50 years old, served as Wycombe Wanderers’ manager for 11 years and led them to the Championship in 2020, which was considered a remarkable achievement. However, he left for QPR in 2023 but was dismissed after only eight months. Ainsworth may be motivated to prove himself in the football world and could be a viable candidate for Barnsley to consider. During his time at Wycombe Wanderers, he accomplished significant feats and is now considering his options.
