NDSU Athletics Director Matt Larsen Announces Major Changes in the Athletic Department

North Dakota State University Athletics Director Matt Larsen has announced changes for five administrative staff members, who collectively have 70 years of experience within the NDSU athletic department.

These adjustments highlight the significant contributions of each staff member, emphasizing increased revenue generation, fiscal strategy, and enhanced engagement with fans and donors supporting Bison Athletics.

Colleen Heimstead has been promoted to Executive Associate Athletic Director and will maintain her role as the Senior Woman Administrator. She oversees all aspects of NCAA, conference, and institutional compliance, collaborating closely with campus departments, including student financial services, registration and records, and academic advising, to ensure compliance for 16 sports and around 400 student-athletes. Heimstead has been with NDSU since 2005.

Josh Hemingway has assumed the position of Senior Associate Athletic Director for Business Operations. He has led business operations and finance for NDSU Athletics since February 2021. An NDSU accounting graduate, Hemingway began his journey in the Bison athletic department in 1995 as an accounting intern, later advancing through roles such as group ticket sales manager and director of tickets, events, and facility operations.

Derrick Lang is now Executive Associate Athletic Director for Development. He will handle daily development operations while continuing as the primary liaison to the Team Makers Board of Directors, a role he’s held since 2019. A graduate of NDSU and former Bison football player, Lang joined the athletic department in 2016 after serving as assistant director of marketing and fan engagement and director of external relations and corporate partnerships.

Jack Maughan has been appointed Senior Associate Athletic Director for Principal Giving. Previously the senior associate AD for development for 12 years, he has played a crucial role in securing significant gifts for endowments and facility projects. A former student body president and All-America wrestler for the Bison, Maughan also had a 22-year coaching career at Northern Colorado.

Garrett Mennenga has been elevated to Director of Annual Giving after two years as assistant director of development. He will continue focusing on all aspects of the annual fund, including season tickets, tailgating, Team Makers memberships, the hospitality program, and transportation. Before joining NDSU in 2022, Mennenga worked as a sports operations graduate assistant at Minnesota State University Mankato and interned with the Green Bay Packers and Arizona State.
