Going into the lottery, the odds were more favorable for the Blue Jackets to drop rather than climb. The pre-lottery odds were as follows. No teams positioned behind the Blue Jackets advanced past them, and the Blue Jackets themselves did not secure a higher spot through a lottery win.

Prior to the lottery, Bob McKenzie had published his draft rankings, outlining the players the Blue Jackets will have the opportunity to choose from at their draft position.
Ahead of the NHL Draft Lottery Bob McKenzie has dropped a Top 15 Ranking based on a survey from 10 scouts.
