Fabian Lysell Under the Spotlight as Bruins Training Camp Begins.
As the Boston Bruins gear up for the 2024-25 NHL season, all eyes are on prospect Fabian Lysell. The 21st overall pick from the 2021 Entry Draft finds himself under intense scrutiny as he vies for a roster spot on the team that will face off against the Florida Panthers in the season opener on October 8.
Lysell, along with fellow prospects like Georgii Merkulov, is looking to fill the void left by Jake DeBrusk, who departed for the Vancouver Canucks in free agency. With limited salary cap space, Bruins General Manager Don Sweeney has made securing a new contract for goaltender Jeremy Swayman his top priority.
Lysell’s first chance to impress head coach Jim Montgomery came on Sunday night at TD Garden against the New York Rangers. However, his performance fell short of expectations, as he struggled to make an impact and seemed disengaged for much of the game. This lackluster showing is concerning for a player trying to break into the NHL and make a strong first impression.
Montgomery Sends a Clear Message to Lysell.
Following a practice session at Warrior Ice Arena on Tuesday, Montgomery addressed the media and discussed Lysell’s performance. The Bruins’ third-year head coach made it clear that he expects more from his young forward in the team’s second preseason game against the Washington Capitals.
Montgomery has a proven track record of successfully motivating his players. Last May, he called out star winger David Pastrnak before a crucial Game 7 against the Toronto Maple Leafs, and Pastrnak responded by scoring the game-winning goal in overtime. The Bruins will be hoping for a similar reaction from Lysell as he looks to secure a spot on the NHL roster rather than being assigned to the AHL.
As the preseason progresses and the regular season approaches, Lysell will have several more opportunities to showcase his skills and prove he deserves a place on the Bruins’ opening night roster. With the team’s limited cap space and the need to fill the void left by DeBrusk’s departure, Lysell’s development and performance will be closely monitored by the coaching staff and fans alike.
