Jerami Grant of the Portland Trail Blazers had another strong season, maintaining an average of 21 points, 3.5 rebounds, 2.8 assists, and 0.8 steals per game while shooting at 45% from the field, 40% from three-point range, and 82% from the free-throw line. His consecutive seasons with over 40% three-point shooting are particularly noteworthy given that he wasn’t initially known for his shooting abilities when he entered the league.
Despite Grant’s impressive performance in Portland, this offseason presents an ideal opportunity for the Blazers to offload his hefty contract. Last July, the Blazers forward signed a substantial five-year, $160 million deal. It was a questionable decision at the time, and this summer, it is crucial for General Manager Joe Cronin and the Blazers to rectify this error.

Grant, arguably the team’s top player, should be moved precisely because of this status. While he excels in his role, having him as the focal point means Portland is unlikely to achieve significant success. Grant is better suited as a standout contributor on a championship-caliber team, given his coveted skill set as a 6-foot-7 player with a 7-foot-3 wingspan, adept at creating his shot and excelling as a floor spacer.
At 30 years old, Grant remains a high-quality player with several good years ahead. However, the longer he stays with the Blazers, the lower his trade value will become as his performance may no longer justify his substantial contract, including a $36.4 million player option for the 2027-28 season.
By trading Grant this summer, the Blazers can pave the way for emerging forwards like Toumani Camara, Jabari Walker, and potential new additions from the 2024 NBA Draft to flourish. This move would also provide the team with an opportunity to increase their draft lottery odds through more losses.
Moreover, it would address the Blazers’ urgent financial concerns, including the looming luxury tax and the expected financial constraints for the 2024-25 season unless changes are made. Moving Grant appears to be the clear solution to multiple challenges facing the Blazers and should be a priority this offseason.
